The legal or formally acknowledged union of two persons as companions in a personal relationship is known as marriage. Marriage Certificate (Wedding Certificate), also known as “Nikkah Nama” in Urdu, is an official document of a couple’s marriage and is required to prove a name change when they marry. In Pakistan, the formal marriage certificate (Nikkah Nama) is usually issued in Urdu.

In Pakistan, there are two types of marriage certificates:

  • Manual marriage certificate, commonly known in Urdu as Nikkah Nama.
  • NADRA marriage certificate that has been entirely computerized.

NADRA marriage certificate:

The NADRA marriage certificate is a fully computerized document that provides the content of married persons in both Urdu and English. NADRA has established a particular method to issue NADRA marriage certificates, similar to how it issues NADRA birth certificates. These authentic NADRA Marriage Registration Certificates are now utilized in place of Urdu Nikkah Nama in various legal cases in Pakistan and other countries around the world.

In Pakistan, what papers are necessary for the issuance of a marriage certificate?

  • Copy of groom’s CNIC (Pakistani ID Card)

  • Local union councils in all major cities, including Karachi, Lahore, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, Multan, Hyderabad, and Peshawar, are fully empowered to issue NADRA marriage certificates on special paper using NADRA-installed technology.
  • Inhabitants of cantonment areas can get their NADRA marriage certificates from cantonment board offices, whereas residents of several minor cities can get them through TMA offices. people of Islamabad can get their NADRA marriage certificates from the Arbitration Council office.
  • You will be asked to fill out an application form for a NADRA marriage certificate by the concerned issuing office. The same issuing office can provide you with this application form.
  • In the same issuing office, submit your documents, along with a completed application form and the official fee.
  • On the specified day, pick up your NADRA marriage certificate from the same issuing office. If all relevant documents are present, a NADRA marriage certificate can be provided within 3-5 working days in most cases, but this time frame can vary depending on the circumstances.
  • Verify that the information on your NADRA marriage certificate is correct. Check your marriage certificate for accuracy and compare it to your legal paperwork. If the issuing office makes a typo, you have the right to request a correction.
